Special Experiences

Our students have the opportunity to participate in once in a lifetime experiences. From overseas travel to challenging life learning experiences we are proud of the opportunities we have been able to offer.

Japanese Experience

Over the last few years Te Awamutu Intermediate School, in conjunction with a number of other Waikato schools, has fostered and enjoyed a relationship with Makuhari High School in Japan.

During the year our school also hosts a Japanese intern teacher, who works in our school with small groups of students who get a chance to learn about and experience some Japanese culture. Four or five families from the school are given the opportunity to board the Japanese intern in their homes for approximately eight weeks at a time. We invite families to take part in this programme early in the new year through our weekly newsletter. This is a most rewarding experience for all involved.

At the end of February, our school hosts approximately 30 students from Makuhari Junior High School in Japan. These students are billeted with families and stay for ten days. This is a wonderful opportunity, and we invite families to take part. In Term 4 we host another group of students from Ritsumeikan Keisho Junior High. These students are also billeted with families and stay for ten days.

In September, a group of T.A.I. students and one staff member travel to Makuhari in Japan. The trip is in conjunction with other Waikato Intermediate and Middle Schools.

Students pay about $3000 to take part and this amount covers all expenses and spending money. An information evening for interested parents and Year 7 students is held near the end of their Year 7 year and notification of this, is through the newsletter.

Noumea EXPERIENCE

We provide a travel experience to Noumea each year. Those students taking French are encouraged to go, but the trip is open to all students. It is for 7 nights and the cost is approximately $2000. It is an excellent opportunity for students to experience the life and culture of this French speaking country.

The week is filled with activities, including visiting local attractions such as museums, art galleries, markets, patisseries etc, the aquarium and a visit to Armedee Island to snorkel, canoe and experience a true Noumean feast.

Samoa EXPERIENCE

The seven night trip is designed to develop awareness of a Pacific Island culture close to New Zealand. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the lifestyle, activities available and culture of these amazing islands. The departure is still to be scheduled.

The cost is approximately $2000 per student. The cost includes flight, accommodation and most meals, apart from some breakfasts and snacks. More details will be available once numbers and dates are confirmed with the experience.

Ski Trip EXPERIENCE

Every year around 28 participants are given the opportunity to spend a week skiing at the Whakapapa skifields, on Mount Ruapehu. The trip caters for children of any skiing ability, but children who have never skied before get real enjoyment and satisfaction from the trip.

The group departs on Sunday, around lunchtime, and spends 4 days at Christiania ski lodge, before returning home on the Thursday night. The package we offer includes all ski passes, ski hire, mountain transport, accommodation, food, a ski lesson, and transport.

This trip is an opportunity for children to try a new activity, get to know children from other classes, and overcome many challenges. The places for this trip fill up quickly, so it pays to register your interest early. The cost for the trip is approximately $500.
